Much like last year at the Rock Valley Invitational, a Madison College golfer held the top individual score. This time around - in the WolfPack's first conference invite of the year - in addition to having the top scorer, they also won the invite, finishing ahead of host Rock Valley College, College of Dupage and Milwaukee Area Technical College.
The WolfPack shot a 305 at Elliot Golf Course, which gave them a narrow four-stroke win in Rockford, Ill. over Rock Valley, who shot a 309 on the day. Dupage finished in third with a 330 and Milwaukee rounded out the invite with a 368.
Evan Wartgow held the top score at an invitational for the second time of the season and for the second consecutive day. He finished as the top-scoring individual after shooting a 147 in the two rounds of golf he played during the Highland "36." He shot a 72 at Elliot Golf Course and was the only player to hit par at the invitational.
It helps having the top-scoring individual at an invitational, but it was a team effort to walk away with the win at the end of the day. In addition to
Wartgow's top score at the invitational, first-year player
Patrick Cahill finished with the second-best score and one stroke behind his teammate with a 73.
Kyle Braska rounded out the top five with a 78 as the WolfPack had the top two golfers at the invitational and three of the top five.
The WolfPack and
Wartgow hope to carry their momentum from the season's opening weekend to Janesville where they will compete in the Edgewood Fall Classic at the Glen Erin Golf Course on Sept. 3-4.
